TRANSVERSE – Returning to the Fount of Destruction (Somewherecold Records)
written by Patsker Omaer Beguin 12/09/2023

"Just as the members of the 'winter gestapo' are complaining about the heat of this exceptionally wonderful Indian summer, we listen to Returning to the Fount of Destruction . It is an interesting post-apocalyptic electronic work by the duo Transverse , consisting of Matthew Richter ( car dealer ) and Jason T. Lamoreaux ( The Corrupting Sea ). Returning to the Fount of Destruction is the Americans' second album since they met through contributions to a charity compilation on the Somewherecold Records label.

Just as our planet is literally and figuratively on fire, Transverse's synergy solidifies into hybrid electronic fabrics. Richter and Lamoreaux express their experiences and observations of a frightening world in a series of cinematic-feeling tracks. The pair weave a wide range of electronic music styles into a fascinating album with a lot to discover. We get soundscapes, ambient and Berlin School-based pulses that wade into rather murky waters. Returning to the Fount of Destruction is not a dark ambient album but rather a punkish sonic scream about the disease of our post-capitalist society, the consequences of the pandemic and the evil in which certain political tendencies manifest themselves. However,

The titles of the tracks on Returning to the Fount of Destruction appeal to the imagination and emphasize many things that are going on in our world. Apart from a few hopeful signals, there is a depressed and anxious atmosphere on this album. The creeping in of audio recordings of protests against the suppression of personal choice makes some of the songs even more powerful. Returning to the Fount of Destruction is not an album that makes you happy. Richter and Lamoreaux succeed in creating an electronic album in which melody, soundscapes and minimal beats intertwine into a fascinating and emotionally charged sonic cloud that continues to reverberate."

"Returning to The Fount of Destruction was released on 1 September 2023 via Somewherecold Records.

Last year the collaborative sound endeavor that was Transverse would release their debut "Slow Moving Apocalypse", a wavering sonic journey through dystopian life and finding free exploration in the mire. Not one to let a good thing rest, Jason Lamoreaux (The Corrupting Sea) and Matthew Richter (autodealer) have returned with quite the follow-up. While the previous album evoked some kind of dystopian future and evoked a hint of fantastical sci-fi vibe, visually the album feels more like a snap back into a harsh reality.

On the surface reading tracks like "Throw The Landlord Out in the Cold" and "Anger Management At The Tip of a Spear" would evoke something very intense, likely up-tempo. While there is intensity it's in a more subversive and subtle tense by way of the music presented. "Fucking Your Brain With a Crayon" is a strangely peaceful opener, with lucid atmosphere and a piano rhythm that actually reminds me of the Resident Evil 2 Save Room theme, just much brighter and fluttery. Unlocking core memories aside this is a great opener that allows deep breathing and bracing for what's ahead.

"Get Rid of the GOP" is a breeze of hope amid catchy drum beats and "Grave Dancing" picks up the pace with an infectious electronic groove with the right hints of chill aesthetic. The aformentioned "Throw The Landlord Out in the Cold" is a slice of spiteful melodic joy, as if you're watching the villain waver in the ambient rains, every piano note like a breeze pushing frosty wind needles into the exploiter who'd push needles in the suffering and barely surviving.

The final three tracks are highlights of their own in two seven-minute compositions and a nice five minutes sandwiched in between. "Dying Countries and Mediocre Spawn" is meditative, an intense sonic musing on the human condition and societal decay, subtle voices wisping into the aether as "Anger Management at The Tip of a Spear" follows as the march forwad and springing of life out of the trance. Finally the ending track of "Fuck It, Let's Thelma and Louise This Shit" latches onto the brain stem with distorted drones and political commentary. Despite all the chaos there is a melody, like a twisted inverted lullaby to pull you out of whatever fantasy you're in.

Gotta give a shout-out to that song title again. I'd love to die on the road in a glorious blaze.

Transverse's follow-up keeps the sonic atmospheres strong and sparks further imagination while the duo of Lamoreaux and Richter make their leftist viewpoints abundantly clear. "Returning to the Fount of Destruction" is a hell of a follow-up record and is masterfully paced from it's slow burn intro to it's more up-tempo middle to a slow diving end. More importantly it pushes both performers and further expands their sonic palettes, accentuating each other's styles and building each other up to make a strong duo.
Find solace in underdogs and outsiders.

Fuck capitalism.

Highly Recommended!"

"Transverse is an ambient electronic act from Los Angekles, CA, Somewherecold Records will release their album, “Returning to the Fount of Destruction” on September 1, 2023. I listened to “Fucking Your Bran with a Crayon”

My impressions: This track is a widely-woven fabric of interior light. Perhaps the title implies a kind of lucid lobotomy, a technique of brain matter obliterating erasure which fortunately creates a heavenly aetherial bliss. Even if not, that’s what this piece is to me. It is mystery. It is gathering wind. It is peace."
